11 Indicators of Spiritual Growth in Children

When we moved into our new house a couple of years ago, I noticed something in one of the bedroom closets.  Here is a picture of it. The previous owners had been measuring the growth of their child.  They measured his height each year as he grew physically.

You can see from the picture that the child is growing each year.

It's pretty easy to measure the physical growth of a child. All you need is a tape measure and a pencil.

As children's ministry leaders and parents, we should be measuring the spiritual growth of the children in our ministry.

But the bigger question is this - which indicators of spiritual growth should we be watching?  How can we know if our children are growing spiritually?  How can we know where they are at in their walk with Jesus?

Let's look at 11 key indicators of spiritual growth in children.

A desire to talk with God in prayer.

They will begin asking questions about prayer.  They will often initiate a prayer session.  They want to spend time with God. They jump in and engage in the nightly prayer time when going to bed.

They have a desire for the Word of God.

"Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment."  I Peter 2:2

When a baby is hungry, they usually begin to cry. They need the milk to grow physically.  So God compares the milk to the Word of God. Children need it to grow spiritually.  They will begin reading their Bible and devotion books during the week.

They attend church and know what they got out of it. On the way home, if you ask, they will tell you what they learned that day.  You don't have to drag them to church, rather they will be dragging you to church.

They become more like Jesus with their attitude and actions.

"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!"  2 Corinthians 5:17

They develop a sincere passion to know Jesus and follow Him. Their outward actions will reflect this from their heart.

They ask to start serving.

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28

They begin to obey God's Word.

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only."
James 1:22

They will begin manifesting the fruit of the Spirit.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

They will grow in wisdom and will begin to know how to make wise choices.

"And Jesus GREW in WISDOM and stature, and in favor with God and man."
Luke 2:52

They will begin to be better at forgiving others.  When someone wrongs them, they will be able to sincerely forgive that person.

They will begin to share their faith with others. They will want other people to experience Jesus and His love and forgiveness as they have. They will begin sharing their testimony with others.

They will be guided and led by the Holy Spirit. There is no "Jr. Holy Spirit." The same Holy Spirit that indwells grown-ups indwells children. He is the One who will give them the spiritual power they need to live for Jesus.

While many of these are outward manifestations of spiritual growth, we must also realize that children's spiritual growth will come from the inside out.

We must also keep in mind that they are still children.  They will make mistakes.  They will make bad choices at times.  Just like we do as adults.

We must also remember that God uses people to help kids grow spiritually.  People like you that serve faithfully in children's ministry.  You are God's disciple-maker.  An investment into the spiritual life of children is one of the best ways to see spiritual fruit in your own life...now and for years to come.

Top 50 Kids' Brands

I often talk about how we are missionaries to the next generation.  The next generation of kids will number over 2 billion in the next few years.  They truly are the greatest mission field in the  world.

As missionaries to kids, we need to know what they like.  This helps us to enter their world and show them that we care about what they care about.  They are also great talking points when striking up a conversation with a child.

20 Powerful Quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He was the spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

Inspired by his Christian beliefs, he was instrumental in advancing civil rights through nonviolence.

He was a powerful speaker and many of his quotes are remembered through the decades and still make an impact to this day.

Here are 20 of his most powerful quotes.  Take some time today to read through these and think deeply about what he said.

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.

The quality, not the longevity, one's life is what is important.

 A life cannot live.

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.

He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

Only in the dark can  you see the stars.

There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.

A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude.

If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.

Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service… You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.

I am not interested in power for power’s sake, but I’m interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good.

Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Use me God.  Show me to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

By opening our lives to God in Christ, we become new creatures. This experience, which Jesus spoke of as the new birth, is essential if we are to be transformed nonconformists … only through an inner spiritual transformation do we gain the strength to fight vigorously the evils of the world in a humble and loving spirit.

The Potential That's Sitting in Your Ministry

If you read my articles, you know I believe in the importance of investing in the next generation.

And I have often said, you never know who is sitting in your class or small group.

I have often been surprised when I find out that one of the kids who was in my ministry years ago, is all grown up and doing amazing things.

I had one of those moments this past weekend.  I was back visiting with some ministry friends and catching up on some of the old times.  We were talking about how some of the kids who grew up in our ministry have gone on to do some amazing things.

I asked how the ____________ family was doing?  They had 3 sons that I taught and coached in basketball many years ago.

The people I was talking with informed me that those 3 boys (along with a cousin) had started a band in their garage.  They went on to become a famous, nationally known band that has received multiple awards and accolades.  Can you guess what band they are?  Leave your guesses in the comment section below to find out.

It was interesting to me.  I never knew they could sing when I was investing in them.  I also never knew they played musical instruments.

I wonder if there have been other kids that had gifts and talents that I have failed to recognize and encouraged to pursue.

You see, you never know who is sitting under the sound of your voice.  It may be a future president, doctor, nursery volunteer or godly business man or woman?

You have so much potential sitting in your room or small group.  Invest in the kids God has brought across your path.  You may be discipling a future world-changer.

The Number One Thing Kids and Parents Are Doing at Home Together

Do you know what the number one thing kids and parents do together when they are home?

For Millennial parents and their kids, it's video gaming.

Data from the Fullscreen  company found that parents spend an average of 8.5 hours a week gaming with their children.

Millennial parents grew up with amazing game systems and it has followed them into adulthood and parenthood.

The company says this.  “These new parents were the ones who bolstered growth in the video game industry when they were young, and now they’re passing down a love of gaming to kids,”  To succeed in the coming years, companies are going to want to join the space with new games.”

The bottom line is this.  Kids and parents love playing video games together because it gives them a common, fun experience.

It is noteworthy to think about this and strategize how the church can provide kids and their parents with shared experiences at home and at church.

We often complain about finding "take home" papers blowing in the parking lot or shoved in the trash can at home.  Perhaps the bigger question is this.

How can we create and distribute something that kids and parents will use at home?  I ask this question,  because most churches struggle with tools and resources that parents and kids actually want to engage in at home.

Perhaps it's time to make sure our take home attempts are creative, fun and engaging.  We know why video games are engaging for kids and parents.  But I also know that kids love to play board games, active games and fun games.

What can you create that kids and parents will do together at home?  What games can you create that parents and kids will actually engage with?  What activities can you create that are so fun that kids will beg their parents to play with them at home?

I believe if we want kids and parents to engage with the lesson at home, then we've got to create something that will be engaging.

Your turn.  What discipleship tools are you creating that parents and kids are doing at home?  What are some ideas you have to make home discipleship appealing and doable?  Share your thoughts and insights in the comment section below.
