A Top Leadership Tool

This week I was reading about a young leader in I Kings 3. You've probably heard of him...his name was Solomon. God basically asked him what he wanted as a young leader starting out. Check out his reply...

"Lord my God, You have now made Your servant king in my father David's place. Yet I am just a youth with no experience in leadership...So give Your servant an obedient heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil." (I Kings 3)

Solomon asked for wisdom. Wisdom is one of the top things you must have as a leader. So how do you get it?

1. Read for it. Proverbs is full of wisdom. Read one Proverbs a day. It was written by a guy named Solomon...

2. Listen for it. Rehoboam made a leadership mistake when he didn't listen to the advice of older, wiser, more experienced leaders. Go to older and wiser leaders for advice on leadership decisions. Leaders who have been down the road farther than you. I have a dear friend who is in his 60's. He is a wise, experienced leader. Anytime I have a major leadership decision to make, I ask his advice. (2 Chronicles 10)

3. Ask for it. God says in James 1 to ask Him for wisdom and He will give it to you. Next time you are about to go into that important meeting...whisper a prayer and ask Him for wisdom. Next time you are about to talk with a parent that is upset...whisper a prayer and ask Him for wisdom. Next time you have to make an important leadership decision...whisper a prayer and ask Him for wisdom. He'll give it to you.

Wisdom is essential if you are going to become all God wants you to be as a leader. Check out God's response to Solomon's request.

"I will give you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has never been anyone like you before and never will be again."

Wisdom will set you apart as a great leader.
