Supervisor or Coach?

Our church has a new ministry Pastor named Ken Behr. He came from Life Church. He is overseeing all ministry from children to adults which obviously includes the God's Kids Team. Ken is a kind, wise, visionary, and relational leader.

I report directly to him and I am excited God brought him.  He has already helped me grow in several areas. Yesterday when we were meeting he gave us this great quote...

"If you tell people HOW to do something you are a SUPERVISOR, but if you tell people WHY they are doing something you are a COACH."

The thought really challenged me. I want to be a coach instead of just a supervisor? So what are some ways to make that happen? How are you a coach to your staff or volunteers?

I blogged about this just two days ago...http://childrensministrytodayandtomorrow.wordpress.com/2010/08/18/pastor-as-baseball-playermanager/

I completely see pastors as coaches as compared to supervisors.

Coaches partner with their players by providing them the leadership and guidance. I do this by providing my people with what they need in order to succeed. I provide them with leadership and wisdom. Then I turn them loose. I know that they'll do things their own way but with my leadership. That is how I Pastor/Coach.

That's aweseome Ken. I look forward to reading your post. Your leaders are blessed to have you.
