Why This Game is Becoming a Cultural Phenomenon with Kids

Roblox, an online gaming platform, is fast becoming a cultural phenomenon with kids.  It is currently attracting over 48 million active players every month.  With the largest user-generated online gaming platform, and over 15 million games created by users, Roblox is the #1 gaming site for kids in the world.

It was created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004.  The name Roblox is a combination of the words "robots" and "blocks.

What is causing the game to be so popular?  For starters, it focuses on being a social platform that is powered by sharing user-generated content.  This allows kids to hang out with friends, create with friends and compete with friends.  Safety guidelines are in place such as chat content being limited to a list of acceptable words that are allowed to be used.  Social interaction includes the ability to have up to 200 friends and unlimited followers.  Kids can also join community groups in which they can participate in group relationships.

Another thing that makes Roblox stand out is it gives users the ability to monetize their talent and earn money from the content and characters they add to the world.  Some users will surpass $1 million in revenue this year.

A big draw for kids is the fact the game is also very engaging and immersive.  It is the largest virtual reality platform in the world.  Kids can explore 3-D worlds and participate in activities such as crafting items, gathering resources and challenging others.

Kids can also customize their virtual characters with different hats, head shapes, body shapes, clothes and gear.  They can even create their own clothing.

Children's ministry should take note of the success of Roblox to connect with kids and learn from it.  Think about these questions.
  • Roblox provides kids the opportunity to connect with each other and belong to a group.  As a children's ministry, how are we helping kids connect and feel a sense of belonging in our ministry?
  • Roblox empowers kids to use their gifts and talents for personal profit.  As a children's ministry, how are we empowering kids to use their gits and talents to further the kingdom of God?
  • Roblox provides an immersive and engaging environment for kids.  As a children's ministry,  how are we engaging kids through activities, games and lessons?
  • Roblox gives kids the opportunity to make it personal.  As a children's ministry, are we trying to force kids into a one-size-fits-all learning style or are we customizing to fit their individual learning styles and preferences?
