I had something very interesting happen to me a few weeks ago. I was checking out at a store and the cashier asked me if wanted the senior citizen discount.
What...do I look like a senior citizen??? So much that you would ask if I wanted the discount?
The discount was 25% off for those 55 and older. I told her "Yes...I am 56 years old and do qualify." Hey...25% is 25%.
In the scriptures, it is interesting to see that there is no mention of "retirement" from serving Jesus. Yes...you may have to physically adjust what you are doing...but you can still serve in some capacity.
I am reminded of David in Scripture. Look what this verse says about David serving God in Acts 13:36.
David served God.
Our reason for serving is to fulfill God's purpose for our life. You are not here by accident. God created you for a specific purpose. He has an assignment that only you can fulfill. As long you are here, God is not finished with you yet.
You are called to serve now and until you breathe your last breath.
Once you have fulfilled God's purpose for your life, you will breathe your last breath and God will bring you home. You will fall asleep and wake up in the presence of Jesus.
Until then, we are called to actively pursue and follow God's plan for our life.
David served a specific group of people.
David was called to serve people. That's what it's all about. Serving other people and showing them the love of Christ through our service.
David served His own generation.
You are living where you are and when you are because of God's plans. You are ministering to your generation not by accident, but by divine purpose. Look what it says in Acts 17:25-27.
"From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.”
God has placed you at this time and this place. He has and will continue to work through your life as you follow Him and walk in His destiny for your life.
David served with eternity in mind.
You could have been born 200 years ago. You could have been born 500 years ago. But no...you were born for this specific time and place in history. The time you have left here on earth should be dedicated to God and used to make a difference in eternity. Live your life with eternity in mind.
You are still alive because God is not done with you. You will be here until the calling He has on your life is completed.
You may be struggling right now. The ministry is lagging. You feel discouraged and want to quit. You wonder if God really did call you to serve Him? You are searching for the purpose of your life?
Be reminded today that God still wants to use you in a mighty way.
I remember one of the teacher's on my team. Her name was Mrs. Williams. She was in her 90's. I was concerned for her health and asked if she wanted to continue serving or step down due to health reasons. Plus the class she was teaching was on the second floor.
She reminded me that we had an elevator and that she believed God wasn't done with her yet. She continued to teach for a couple of years...each Sunday morning riding the elevator to her classroom on the second floor. I made sure to put a couple of younger teachers with her to assist her.
She served faithfully until she passed. At her funeral, I shared with everyone how faithful she was and the great heart she had to see the next generation walk in the ways of God. She never quit because she never lost sight that God had a call on her life.
How about you? You are breathing and that means God still has a special plan for your life. Walk in it. Fulfill it. Be passionate about it.
