20 Great Motivational Posters for Children's Ministry

Recently at the KidMin conference in Chicago,  I taught a workshop about building volunteer teams.

As part of the workshop, I asked the attendees to create sample posters to invite people to serve in children's ministry.  The posters would reflect some of the principles we were sharing regarding building volunteer teams.

They did a great job.  Below are the posters they created.  Maybe it will spark some ideas you can use to help build the volunteer team in your church.

You can get lots of more ideas about building a volunteer team in my book "The Formula for Building Great Volunteer Teams."  It's available in hard copy and ebook formats at this link.

Join Me at the KidMin Conference

I am excited to be part of the KidMin Conference this fall in Chicago.  The KidMin Conference is a gathering of thousands of kidmin leaders who are passionate about reaching and discipling kids and families.
There's nothing like the KidMin conference.  Actually it's more like a family reunion than a conference.  At KidMin, you’ll find a place where you’re seen and heard…where you can learn and actually leave with a plan…where you can make meaningful connections with other children’s ministers...where you can be spiritually fed.

I will be sharing several times throughout the conference and I'd love to see you there.  For many of you, we are connected through this blog, Facebook, social media, etc.  But there's nothing like connecting and growing together in person.

I'll be sharing in the pre-conference sessions about leading well in children's ministry, in conference workshops about leadership and building volunteer teams and in a large group session as well.

The conference is for everyone who serves in children’s ministry.  To all those who are weary, come rest.  To those who long to learn, come connect to the Truth.  To those who are rejoicing, come dwell in God’s faithfulness.  You can get more information about the conference and registration at this link.

KidMin Conference Teaching Handouts

This past week I shared 4 sessions at the KidMin Conference in Chicago.

The sessions were about building a thriving volunteer team.  One of the most important aspects of children's ministry is volunteers.  Without them, there is no children's ministry.

Here are the handouts / notes from the sessions.  You can click on the links to download.

Session 1 - SELECT a Winning Team

Session 2 - EQUIP Your Team

19 Ways to Encourage Your Volunteers (Kidmin Conference notes pt.4)

Kidmin Conference 2013
Encouraging Your Team

“A great volunteer team is made up of rookies and veterans.”

65% of volunteers say never been thanked.

1.  Create culture of encouragement

“Culture doesn’t happen by accident – it is created.”

2.  Serve them

After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” 34 But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. 35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” Mark 9

3.  Love them

People don’t follow a title – they follow someone they love and care about

4.  Do Life with them

5.  Help them serve from the overflow

·      Make sure they are attending “big church.”
·      Stay away from “can you stay over and help for an extra service.”
·      Don’t let them overload on serving.
·      Give them time off.
·      Honor them by honoring ratios.

6.  Brag on them

7.  Respect them
·      never confront or correct by email or phone call – in person
·      never demean in front of others
·      return their phone calls and emails
·      follow thru when you tell them you’re doing to do something – write it down

8.  Care for Them

9.  Party with them

10.  Listen to them

11.  Encourage them with your words

12.  Value them

13.  Thank them

14.  Pray for them

15.  Give them gifts

16.  Remind what they do is vitally important

17.  Remind them they are making a difference

18.  Affirm them

19.  Pay them
  • a changed life is their pay
  • stories of life change - tell them
  • invite them to baptisms

18 Great Ideas to Invite People to Join Your Volunteer Team

This past weekend at the Kidmin Conference, I taught about how to invite people to join your volunteer team.  I asked my friends in the session to create prototype posters that would illustrate the principles that were taught.

They came up with some great ideas.  Here are their posters.  They created these in like 5 minutes.  They reflect several things.
  • Invite with vision not need.
  • Invite people to the "why" of "what" you do.
  • People want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They will be drawn toward it.
  • We are called to make disciples not volunteers.
  • People want to be part of something that is family and fun.
